چکیده

Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) have been identified as the principal host species for Sin Nombre hantavirus. Assessment of deer mouse immune responses to this agent has been difficult because of a lack of reagents with defined specificity for the discrimination of leukocyte populations. The purpose of this work was to identify currently available immunological reagents directed at house mouse (Mus musculus) leukocyte cell surface antigens that cross-react with deer mouse cells. A panel of 19 monoclonal antibodies was screened for reactivity by flow cytometric analysis. Seven antibodies exhibited binding to deer mouse splenocytes at varying levels compared to house mouse controls. The panel detected cellular phenotypes that are associated with natural and adaptive immune responses, including T cells, B cells, macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils and granulocytes. This panel should facilitate the further examination of deer mouse immune responses to infectious agents.

Embryonic Development of the Deer Mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus

Deer mice, or Peromyscus maniculatus, are an emerging model system for use in biomedicine. P. maniculatus are similar in appearance to laboratory mice, Mus musculus, but are more closely related to hamsters than to Mus. The laboratory strains of Peromyscus have captured a high degree of the genetic variability observed in wild populations, and are more similar to the genetic variability observe...

Cross-transmission studies with Eimeria arizonensis, E. arizonensis-like oocysts and Eimeria langebarteli: host specificity at the genus and species level within the Muridae.

Cross-transmission experiments were done using sporulated oocysts of Eimeria arizonensis from Peromyscus truei and Peromyscus maniculatus, and oocysts of 2 putative species that resemble E. arizonensis, i.e., Eimeria albigulae from Neotoma albigula, and Eimeria onychomysis from Onychomys leucogaster. Oocysts of each species were inoculated into representatives of P. maniculatus and the latter 2...

Genealogical concordance and the specific status of Peromyscus sejugis.

Peromyscus sejugis, a peripheral isolate of Peromyscus maniculatus, is a threatened taxon endemic to 2 small islands in the Sea of Cortés. Although its insularity makes the specific recognition of P. sejugis inherently problematic, resolution of this problem has important conservation implications. To evaluate the specific validity and evolutionary history of P. sejugis, we compared sequence va...

Sixty polymorphic microsatellite markers for the oldfield mouse developed in Peromyscus polionotus and Peromyscus maniculatus

We isolated and characterized 60 novel microsatellite markers from the closely related oldfield mouse ( Peromyscus polionotus ) and deer mouse ( Peromyscus maniculatus ) for studies of conservation, ecological, quantitative and population genetics. We assessed all 60 markers in a wild population of Peromyscus polionotus rhoadsi ( N = 20) from central Florida and found an average of nine alleles...

Contrasting responses of Peromyscus mice of Yosemite National Park to recent climate change

Accurately predicting the response of species to climate change is crucial for the preservation of contemporary species diversity. In the current study, we analyze the response of two congeneric small mammal species (Peromyscus maniculatus and Peromyscus truei) to recent climate change in the region of Yosemite National Park (California, USA). The generalist P. maniculatus did not change its di...
